Rhetorical Analysis: Commercials

Rhetorical Analysis: Commercials

Assignment Details
Compose a 700 word rhetorical analysis of a commercial. You should go to YouTube. And search by a particular company and the word commercials. (We searched Coca-Cola commercials in class, so don’t use this company.) Click the following link for a sample rhetorical analysis of Coca-Cola ads. http://sites.psu.edu/jasoncavanaugh/2014/02/25/paper-1-rhetorical-analysis-of-an-advertisement/
Companies that do business internationally are particularly interesting because they vary their ads for different audiences. This may help you to better characterize an American audience. You should look at several commercials to find one that really interests you.
Your audience is your peers. Refer to chapter 9 in your textbook for this assignment. Your essay should include:
? An interesting introduction that leads your reader into your paper’s thesis and also includes background information: the title of the commercial, the year it was aired (the place it was aired if that is relevant—for example Superbowl 2014), and a brief description of the ad. (You may include a link to this ad directly in the paper.)
? A clear thesis that expresses the point of your paper. This will be your opinion of the commerical’s effectiveness and what techniques or concepts contribute to that effectiveness. (Examples: This company uses ___________ to convey ___________; Through the effective use of _______________, this commercial shows _____________. Be sure to use a strong verb.) ? Body paragraphs with topic sentences that indicate the point of the paragraph. The body of the essay will be your analysis: introduce the concept you will discuss in the first sentence of each paragraph and explain how that concept contributes to the commercial’s effectiveness. Body paragraphs should also transition smoothly and directly relate to and back up your thesis. ? Discussion of how the commercial effectively (or ineffectively) uses rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos). These should be weaved into your analysis.
? A conclusion that restates your thesis (in a different way from your intro) and closes your paper.
? A work cited page that includes the company, title of the commerical, and .

YouTube Videos
The MLA does not currently prescribe a citation style for YouTube videos. Based on MLA standards for other media formats, we feel that the following format is the most acceptable for citing YouTube videos:

Author’s Name or Poster’s Username. “Title of Image or Video.” Media Type
Text. Name of Website. Name of Website’s Publisher, date of posting. Medium. date retrieved.

Here is an example of what that looks like:

Shimabukuro, Jake. “Ukulele Weeps by Jake Shimabukuro.” Online video clip.
YouTube. YouTube, 22 Apr. 2006. Web. 9 Sept. 2010.
